A Three-Day Coastal Tour

As preparation for a longer tour of the Oregon Outback bikepacking route, in early October, my friend Mark N. suggested a three-day practice tour in Marin County. Mark's wife Donna, my friend Mark M. and I joined him. Mark N. designed the route with a start in Richmond, camp the first night at Glen Camp in Point Reyes , camp the second night at Bicentennial Camp in the Marin Headlands , and return to Richmond at the end of day three. Day 1 My friend Mark invited me on a two-night bikepack to China Camp and Bolinas Ridge . I gladly accepted, and after some logistics, arrived at our meet-up place in Richmond around 4:30 on a Friday. I thought I'd packed everything I needed, and I was pretty sure I'd packed some things I didn't need. After dropping a car at a BART station for my wife later than I intended, I discovered I'd forgotten, or couldn't find my Garmin GPS unit, so I recorded day 1 on my phone. Margaret Valentine (Cox) Le Long was 34 when she decided to ride her bike from Chicago to San Francisco, from the '20th of May to the 8th of July,' 1897. I haven't been able to find out much about her life, circumstances, or why she chose to ride from Chicago, just that she did it. I know her husband Charles F. Le Long stayed in San Francisco, because he was singing while she was riding . I do know she was a straight-shooter about bad coffee . She was a member of the all-female Falcon Bicycle Club in 1896, and there's some reports of her rides and shenanigans with other members of the club. The story of her ride is remarkable, and several people have written about her.
