Souvenir history & guide of the Pacific coast, Watkins & Griffin, 1892, African-American guidebook of California
I was looking for something else, and found this:
It's the
Souvenir history & guide of the Pacific coast, published by Watkins & Griffin of Oakland, California in 1892, held by
the Library of Congress. It's an old, faded pamphlet that's been poorly bound
in hardcover, making some of the printed pages unavailable at the binding
edge. Lots of ads, some misspellings, grand language. Not that interesting,
right? It is, if you look more closely. I'll let the faded text, buried amidst
the advertisements do the talking. I'll show it as clippings, color-adjusted
to make it more readable. I'll use the page numbering used by archive.org to
refer to the pages. I will leave the spelling and grammar as I found it, I
think it helps to tell the story. Where words are clipped by the binding, I'll
attempt to provide the missing letters. I'll put my comments in italic
Page 5:
This is the front page, I am guessing, of the original pamphlet. Notice
"Oakland Cal" in the bottom right, and "Watkins & Griffin" top left, "L.
C." top right. I like the colors.

Introductory.
This book is intended as a guide for people visiting the Pacific Coast from
other parts of the world. It also contains the names and addresses of
colored people, in several of the prominent cities of California. We trust
that our venture will meet with the approval of both our subscribers and
advertisers, without whose aid we would be unable to succeed.
Yours,
Watkins & Griffin

Look at the pencil marks; "Paid," and the month paid. I'd bet this copy,
registered with the Library of Congress was the publisher's own copy, or one
of its agents, used to ensure advertisers paid for their ads. This pages
advertisers are from Napa, Oakland, Marysville, Sacramento and Woodland.

Sacramento.
The Capital City, is a rich and prosprous city, being a center point for all
trains going North and South. The farmning territory throughout Sacramento
County, is rich and fertile. The rail-road shops being in the city, gives
employment to nearly 200 men.
The Vineyards and Orchards throughout hardly ever needs irrigation, giving
her the advantage of the majority of the counties, throughout the state.
The steamers are constantly loading with products, for San Francisco and
other points.
Sacramento has a number of large and prominent business establishments,
among the most prominent is the Western Hotel, whose proprietor is Mr. Wm.
Land, who has built a trade that is a credit to himself, as well as to the
city.
The Phoenix Flour Mills, are also doing a rushing business. The Buffalo
Brewing Co, are constantly sending off car-loads of their brand.
The leading Grocery, is conducted by Messrs. T. C. Perkins, & C.C.
Perkins, who by their square-dealing has gained the confidence of the best
people in and around the city.

These are really hard to read. See original text. I make some guesses
where illegible. I think it's worth a bit of time to look at these names,
these addresses. Let me know if you have corrections.

Woodland.
Is noted for her beautiful groves, level streets and handsome residences.
Woodland is the county seat of Yolo County, and is situated about 23 miles
northeast of Sacramento. The country around Woodland is inviting, and the
yeild of grain and fruit is of the best quality. The population is steadily
increasing.
Woodland is the home of Mr. B. Campbell, probably the weathest colored
man in the state, and the possessor of more than 3000 acres of land, and
hundreds of head of stock.
The Wooodland Flour Mills was awarded first premium at the State Fair in
Sacramento. Many new buildings are to be erected in the next few months
among them an Opera House and a first-class Hotel,

CALIFORNIA
The largest State on the Pacific Coast.
California , our glorious State has been the subject of comment for the past
years by the people of the whole world.
Her Wonderful mountain scenery rich and fertile Soil, vast productions, even
Climate which excludes us from heat and cold; her distance in length
extending nearly Eight hundred miles, width nearly three hundred, Extending
along the Pacific Ocean. Her beautiful Valleys, lovely Mountain chains bids
fair to invite hundreds and thousands to throng to our Golden State from all
parts of the World. When they once conceive the idea that while the in other
parts are either burning with heat or almost prostrating with cold we are
blessed with almost one favorable climate and that pertaning to the greatest
under heaven.
The running streams among the mountains, & lovely lakes, makes her the
home for people desiring sport. There is no state in the union posessing
pure air such bright and fragrant flowers in dead of winter. Hot and Cold
mineral Springs are numerous. good accomodations are usually given.
Thousands of dollars yea Millions have been spent on repairing and fitting
the watering places throughtout the State at the different beaches, which is
a heaven upon Earth themselves.
The beaches are reached by Railway and steamer coast line making the
faciltty good. Several new R. Roads are expected to be built in the state in
the next few years, they have already begun to build from Francisco to Salt
Lake City, another grand improvement is the electric system which will run
through to San Jose by the way of Haywards and Niles a distance of nearly
Sixty miles.
The Southern part of the state has struck a tidal wave of progress in the
last few years which has made her famous by her wonderful increase in
population, Los Angeles alone from 12.000 to 60.000 Frame buildings has been
torn down and brick and marble erected, the streets which was once a mud
puddle is now paved that a person may be able to cross, though it be raining
without even getting their feet wet.
The Mining, manufacturing and commerce opportunities through the state are
grand and enviting and will certainly make an opening for thousands to come.
It is a history to hear the pioneer of 49 and 50 tell of their venturing
fourth making their way to the State, their long and weary Journey over the
mountains, around the horn, their struggles with the Grizzle bear of the
forest and the hoot of the Owl by night. The hardships which they endured,
is not yet known to many. But they shrank not nor faltered but fearlessly
beared their bussoms to the storm to avert the destiny which threatened the
country, they were about to inhabit. Their work is approved by heaven and
cheered by the smiles they persevere, The Eagle of freedom Floats over one
and all which was brought about by their united efforts and Palsy be the
hand that would dishonor them, the days of 49 and 50 is in the relix of the
by gone, time has changed from six months journey to 5 and 6 days in chair
cars from the east to the Golden Gate. The day will shortly be at hand when
every foot of her crops of Fruit and Grain will double, which will be shiped
to different parts of the world, upon which thousands will feast and ever
bless the name of California.

Our Metropolis City.
The Golden Gate.
Is universal known as the headquarters for People visiting the
United States and Cal. from all parts of the world. She is noted
for her great Shipping port. Her wharfs are always crowded with
boats loading products for foriegn nations. Places of amusement
and pleasure resort are too numerous to be named. The many
thousands of people that visit the Coast during the winter in
search for a more even climate usualy make San Francisco their
headquarters. She has a number of first-class Hotels which are
often crowded to overflow, among the largest and best is the
Baldwin, covering nearly a whole block, situated in the center of
the city, convenient to all of the theatres and street cars. She
has a number of first-class daily papers with a large circulation
and good patronage. San Francisco is probaly one of the best known
towns in the US and was made famous by the gold excitement some
years ago which brought out so many people until she has an
inhabitants now of nearly 400.000.
The buildings are from six to twelve stories, among the finest and
tallest in the city is that of the Chronicle, situated at the
junction of Kearney. Market and Geary, is owned by that Strawl
Wharted Hero M. H. De Young, editor and proprietor of the San
Francisco Daily Chronicle, one of the best and largest circulated
Papers in the U.S. Among her places of resort is the much talked
of Golden Gate park, Woodwards and Cliff House, which are visited
by many thousand people during the week and especially on Sundays
and holidays. There are street cars on nearly every principal
street in the city to convey people to all parts. Several R. R.
are running into San Francisco from the north, south and east,
bringing the products of the farmer which makes her one of the
greatest commercial towns of the world. With the present rate of
imigration which is so rapidly increasing our numbers, the day
will shortly be at hand when she will rank with London, Paris, New
York and the rest of the great cities.

A printer's smudge makes it hard to read some of these words. I
make guesses, below. It's interesting how the author calls out
the
Golden Gate neighborhood; "At the north end of the Cable line is the much talked of
Golden Gate through which persons are compelled to pass before
entering the Metropilis city of the coast." I knew that San
Pablo Avenue was the route to the east, from Oakland and her
ports for the 49ers, but I had never considered how that
neighborhood was the welcoming place for Oakland. It's now a
predominantly African-American neighborhood on San Pablo
Avenue
Oakland
It is the Capital at Alameda County, and for years has been
looked upon as the best residence city of the Coast. It is only
seven miles from San Francisco, for communication between the
two cities, a boat leaves every thirty minutes on the
Broad-guage and also on the narrow-guage making it possible for
persons to visit either place every fifteen minutes, boats are
always at either place to convey the passengers across the bay.
The city is built upon a permanent berth; the Contra Costa
Mountains sloping along one side which is a part of the coast
and whose foothills are in the city limits. Her educational
facilities are unsurpassed, Streets level; climate even, places
of resort numerous, Electric, Cable and Horse cars running to
all part of the city, also to Berkely and Alameda. Many new
buildings are being erected, and streets are being paved. The
flower gardens are never disturbed by Jack Frost or Winters
chilling breeze, but on the contrary the yards are green with
grass and smells sweet from the scent of Roses the year around.
She has many large, beautiful and costly Churches, with large
congregations. At the north end of the Cable line is the much
talked of Golden Gate through which persons are compelled to
pass before entering the Metropilis city of the coast. A large
and Adaquate Theatre is about completed on the corner of 14th
and Broadway it is a center point for all lines of cars. Among
the hotels of the city is the Galindo where first class
accomodations are always to be had.
