#bikeride through Alameda yesterday. I love this little closed up time capsule store. I’ve seen it before over the years, amazed it hasn’t changed. Anyone know about it?
This made me curious. I found the building on google maps, at 2169 Pacific Avenue, Alameda, CA:
Using a variety of newspaper.com searches for "2169 Pacific" and "Gene's Market," I was able to piece together a history.
Looks like it was once known as Gene's Market, (see photos above), Gene's Grocery and Pacific Market.
From a search on archive.org, it looks like a 'one-story, one-room frame and rustic store' was built in 1939, at 2169 Pacific Avenue, for G. Pagones. (source) It appears George Pagones & Co. were in the real estate business.
In a 1947 newspaper article, Lester Baer was a groceryman at 2169 Pacific Ave.
I know geese like to fly over, and land on Alameda. My kids' soccer games were
often on goose-poop covered soccer fields, on the island. I hope it was a nice
Christmas for the Baer family.

In 1950, Gene's Grocery was there:
Who was Gene? I believe this was him:
Eugene Dexter Logan, 14 November 1915 – 13 December 1966
Eugene D. Logan 21 Jul 1944, Fri Oakland Tribune (Oakland, California) Newspapers.com
Eugene D. Logan 18 Sep 1944, Mon Oakland Tribune (Oakland, California) Newspapers.com
Eugene Logan 16 Nov 1945, Fri Daily Review (Hayward, California) Newspapers.com
Sadly, the story of 2169 Pacific Ave, and Gene Logan turns darker:
13 Dec 1966, Tue Oakland Tribune (Oakland, California) Newspapers.com
One year later, the store is for sale.

There's a painting of it, here:
